Dr. Opeyemi Kolowole publishes an Ideas in ALL Blog: Competition Law Enforcement in the EU and Access to Health Technologies: An Overview of the EU 2024 Competition Law Report on Pharmaceuticals and Medical Technologies – Update on Competition Enforcement in the Pharmaceutical Sector (2018-2022)

On 24 May 2023, the Ideas in ALL Blog published a blog post by Dr Opeyemi Kolawole, a postdoctoral researcher on the PatentsinHumans Project. The blog post examined the interpretations and applications of competition rules by the EU Commission and the National Competition Authorities of EU Member States regarding the accessibility of pharmaceuticals and other medical technologies.

The blog reflects one of the main questions the PatentsInHuman project, led by Prof. Aisling McMahon, seeks to understand. The project examines the nature of EU Competition law, including its rationale, objectives, and how it has been interpreted in case law. It seeks to understand whether and to what extent EU Competition law can mitigate the bioethical concerns that may arise from the use and enforcement of intellectual property rights, particularly patents, and how this may pose significant barriers to access to pharmaceuticals and medical technologies.

The Ideas in ALL Blog piece is available here!

Thank you to the ALL Institute (which co-hosts the PatentsInHumans project with the School of Law and Criminology at Maynooth University) for including the article on the Ideas in ALL Blog and for the ALL Blog Editors for their help and advice
