On 1st July 2024, Prof Aisling McMahon (PI PatentsInHumans) presented a paper  developed as part of the European Research Council funded PatentsInHumans project at the ‘International Association for the Advancement of Teaching and Research in Intellectual Property’ (ATRIP) Conference  (30 June-3 July 2024) which took place at LUISS University, Rome. The conference theme this year was ‘Intellectual Property, Ethical Innovation and Sustainability: Towards a New Social Context for the Digital Economy?’ and a full conference programme is available here.

Prof Aisling McMahon’s paper was entitled “Patents & Ethical Licensing Approaches to Steering Responsible & Ethical Uses of Emerging Technologies: A Regulatory Opportunity?” It traced the use of ethical licensing clauses in the patenting of emerging biotechnologies. It then put forward a novel approach for the use of ‘ethical licensing’ clauses within a broader regulatory framework to steer responsible uses of emerging ethically contentious patentable technologies as part of an approach to shaping ethical innovation.

The ‘International Association for the Advancement of Teaching and Research in Intellectual Property’ (ATRIP) organisation is a leading international organisation which focuses on the advancement of teaching and research in the field of the law of intellectual property law.

Prof McMahon is a Professor of Law specialising in health and intellectual property law at the School of Law and Criminology, Maynooth University. She is Principal Investigator of the ERC funded PatentsInHumans project. You can find out more about the PatentsInHumans project at: www.patentsinhumans.eu
