ERC PatentsInHumans Team Members Prof Aisling McMahon, Lauren Kane, and Dr Opeyemi Kolawole present 3 papers at the SLSA conference, University of Liverpool

On 15-17 April 2025, ERC PatentsInHumans team members Prof Aisling McMahon (PI), Lauren Kane & Dr Opeyemi Kolawole presented three papers based on emerging research conducted as part of the European Research Council (ERC) funded PatentsInHumans project at the Socio-Legal Studies Association (SLSA) conference held at the University of Liverpool.

On 15 April, the team presented two papers at the intellectual property law panel of SLSA: Dr Opeyemi Kolawole presented a paper entitled “Assessing the Role of EU Competition Law in Addressing Bioethical Concerns Raised by the Enforcement of Patents over Health Technologies: A Focus on Recent Developments”. In addition, Prof Aisling McMahon and Lauren Kane presented a co-authored paper entitled “Patents & Access to Everyday Health-Technologies: Implications and Limitations of Addressing Access Issues Through a Human Right to Health”.

Alongside these papers, on 16 April, Prof Aisling McMahon presented a paper at the future of human reproduction panel of the SLSA conference entitled “Patents & Stem Cell-Based Embryo Models in Europe: Moving Beyond Definitional Questions – The Need for Nuanced Bioethics Scrutiny?”
